Have you ever wondered why you procrastinate? It is a self-sabotaging behavior that can set off a chain reaction of other emotions like guilt, shame, self-loathing, and regret and apathy. There are a few reasons why we get into this behavior. Let us look at the most common cause of putting things off.
One reason for this habit is that we are experiencing a lack of self-confidence, leaving us feeling like,” Why bother, it’s not going to go well???” When we are afraid the most primitive part of our brain, sometimes referred to as the reptilian brain, uses four patterns of behavior to ensure our survival: fight, flight, freeze or fawn. The shift to this part of our brains can be caused by the may fears we hold onto in life. Some of these reasons why we put things off (AKA freezing) could be:
*fear of failure
*fear of judgment and ridicule
*fear of not feeling like we are enough
Procrastination is really a byproduct of a deeper issue…. that we are not recognizing our power. When we realize we are falling into the trap of thinking these detrimental looping thoughts that can cause procrastination we need create a state change. This might sound like more procrastination, but it will help you switch gears and reset your mood. Just like in cave man times, once we are out of survival mode ( initiated by fear) we can resume all the more beneficial processes like caring, learning, digesting food, reasoning, using our intuition, and accepting new challenge. If we do not change our thought patterns when we notice them, the suffering could go on for days, weeks or a lifetime. As humans we have the unique ability to imagine fear and get the same physical response in our bodies as real” in your face” danger. The brain produces stress hormones just from our thoughts alone, this over time weakens our systems and causes disease. Wouldn’t it be great to avoid that consequence?

Some ways to change your emotional state are, go for a walk, read a book ,do something nice for someone, think of how much you love someone or even something, pet your cat, meditate, keep a gratitude journal, dance, sing, run around your house 3 times any kind of physical exercise… whatever it takes to get you to change your vibration. Once the cave man got through a scary moment just noticing he was still alive could be a cause for a better feeling (“Yay, I lived!!!”) The act of becoming aware that you need to do one of these things is a total game changer. When you honestly believe you can make a state change you become limitless.
Once you have shaken free of the freeze, ask yourself:
What am I hiding from?
Why am I afraid?
What is it going to take for me to feel like I am prepared and capable of accomplishing what I would like to do?
If we can employ our consciousness to become aware when we start to move towards procrastination, we can move back to our analytical brain by actively changing our state. From here we can figure out why we were feeling afraid, this understanding is true power. We all have challenges come our way, no matter how brave and capable we are, it is what we do with them that separates the mere surviving folks from those who are truly thriving.
